September 2 - 1 Chronicles 5:18-26 | 1 Chronicles 6:3 | 1 Chronicles 6:49 | 1 Chronicles 6:4-15 | 1 Chronicles 7:1-8:28

Good morning everyone,

In todays reading we have a lot of genealogy and while I do find it interesting and from time to time will think, “Ohh … they’re in his or her family line? Good to know.” I will be honest, it is not my favorite reading. It was very important to the tribes of Israel though because, you will remember that when they crossed over into the “land flowing with milk and honey” each tribe was given a specific piece of real-estate that they were to settle on and never sell. If they came on hard times they could trade some of it to buy food, but in the Year of Jubilee, the year at the end of a seven year cycle when all debts were canceled, they would receive it back.

Well, after years of following false gods, as we have just finished reading, all of the Israelites, the ten tribes of the north, Judah and Benjamin and also the two and a half tribes that didn’t cross the river into the promised land, ended up in captivity where they would mix with women from other tribes as well as pagan women, who would bear their children, diluting the blood line to a point where they did not know, or more to the point, their children could not possibly figure out, what their blood lines were, what tribe they belonged to. If they were to have stayed in captivity that would not have been a problem but they would be freed and there would be a lot of questions as to “where do I live” but an even bigger question “who are the Levites??” because only they could be priests. Right?

Furthermore, all the cities had been burned down, totaled, left in ruins with all records of “who’s who” supposedly destroyed with them, but somewhere in some dark corner of some old monastery, or perhaps the kings palace rested one last copy of the genealogy; there most certainly had to have been. Why? Because the Messiah, had to be a legitimate  heir to the throne of king David and while the Gospel gives accounts of Jesus being mocked, blindfolded, insulted, slapped, beaten and accused of crime after crime, not once ….. I will repeat, NOT ONCE was His genealogy ever questioned and you can bet your bottom dollar there were scribes pouring all over it to disprove Him.

Jesus Christ is the King of Kings and He is Lord of Lords. He humbled himself to come to this earth to teach us to be humble and to love one another. He washed the feet of his disciples and wept over the city of Jerusalem. He led us in teachings and gave us parables on how we are suppose to live. He encouraged us with “this is not our forever home.” Oh Yes! We do have waiting for us a mansion with many rooms where God Himself will wipe away our tears and there will be no more pain, no more hurt, no more sin to contend with. Then Jesus was tortured and hung on a Roman cross where He died for our sins so that we would be clean enough to get to that home.

So while I may, and maybe you too, find genealogy to be somewhat boring, it does have it’s purposes, it gives us a clear picture of who is and who isn’t. Jesus is Lord. Philippians 2 tells us that, “Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”

And all God’s people said ….. Amen!

Have a super good day and to God be the glory.

God bless you all ….
