March 8 - Numbers 27:1-29:40

Good morning everyone,

This morning we begin our reading with the daughters of Zelophehad going before Moses. Their father had died of natural causes and he had no sons to receive any of the possessions that would have naturally been passed down. The girls asked Moses to consider allowing them to inherit the land of their father. I love that when Moses didn’t have an answer for the dilemma he went straight to the Lord for direction. The Lord told Moses that if a man had no sons then the inheritance was to go to his daughters. This makes sense to us, but in that time, in their culture, women had very few rights if any, so I am sure the girls were very satisfied with this decision.

Also this morning we read where God instructs Moses to go up Mount Abarim, though he will not get to enter it, God wants Moses to take a look at the Promised Land. I can imagine the sense of satisfaction Moses felt in getting all of who were entrusted to him to within view of their final destination. Maybe he even thought “Wow! We made it.” and breathed a sigh of fulfillment.

I am feeling a little sad that, in our story, it is nearing the end of Moses days on earth, he has become a friend over the past couple months and while a fan of Joshua I will miss Moses and the fine examples he sets out there for us to follow. Moses knows his time is short and asks the Lord to appoint someone to to succeed him in being over the community. The Lord said to take Joshua, son of Nun. I say “Good choice!” :-)

Moses gave Joshua a variety of tasks to ease him into the position. Moses also made sure the people were clear that Joshua had the authority and the ability to lead. Joshua had been training under Moses for 40 years, now it was time for him to put all that he had learned to practice. No pressure …

God does that with us too. We may faithfully work at what God has us doing in a second position, for years and years then one day God will say to us, “I would like you to lead now”. It could be a Bible study, a missions trip, a coaching job, or even your own young family. There are endless areas where the Lord grooms us for a leadership roll. I would encourage you to be faithful where you are while you wait for God’s call and remember, where God guides God provides.

Have a super great day, to God be the glory.

God bless you all …
