June 4 - Song of Songs 1:1-8:14

Good morning everyone,

Today we get to read this very short book of songs. Solomon was said to have written over 1000 songs in his day and this is the number one hit amongst them. It is arguably, one of the most beautiful books in the Bible, the poetry oozes off the pages. Also, it is one of the most controversial books in the Bible for two reasons. One, it’s content, some see it as an erotic love poem, so much so in fact that the Orthodox Jews were not even allowed to read it until they were age 30. Two, its intent. Some believing it is a marriage manual while others  believe it speaks to God’s love for the nation of Israel. Umm, think I’ll go with that one :-)

The man in the song is Solomon. However having said that, I’m thinking he would not have been even a contender for “Husband of the Year.” Good grief, the guy had hundreds of wives but … but he was a great king, would you agree? And God is the greatest King. He looks after his people, especially those who trust Him completely. God’s love is perfect although our love for him is often weak. Just like the man in the poem.

The woman in the song is simply known as “the Shulamite.” Solomon wants her to be his wife, and while she will end up marrying him, she first plays it a bit coy.

Sometimes we too hesitate to join with God, to share our love with him. Perhaps we are unsure of the work God will ask us to do, or the activity He will ask us to give up. Whatever the reason, all He wants is for us to be closer to Him. To know Him, to hear His voice, to trust Him. Hebrews 6:1 says, “Therefore let us move beyond the elementary teachings about Christ and be taken forward to maturity, not laying again the foundation of repentance from acts that lead to death, and of faith in God.” I would encourage you, all of us in fact, to get out out our comfort zone with God. Start saying, “Yes, Lord, yes.”Amen?

Have a great day to God be the glory,
God bless you all …
